In the article Meet Aleister Crowley, the ‘Wickedest Man in the World’ Who Horrified 20th-Century Britain, author Katie Serena describes how Crowley “rejected his upper-class Christian upbringing and explored the darkest corners of occultism”. In his late 20’s, he founded a new religion, Thelema, based on the teachings of a demon named Aiwass, who claimed to be a messenger of Horus, that he wrote down in The Book of the Law. In his early 30’s, he founded a new order named A∴A∴, intended to succeed the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
Crowley published a document titled ‘Liber תישארב’ in The Equinox vol. 1 no. 7 (1912) in which he states meditations – thinking, speaking, walking, and listening in reverse, are a necessary step “to define the separate being of the Exempt Adept from the rest of the Universe, and discover his relation to that Universe”, before taking the irrevocable Oath of the Abyss.
In the title ‘Liber תישארב’ the Hebrew tisereb תישארב is beresit בראשית (‘In [the] beginning’ in Gen 1:1) is reversed.
Are we unknowingly reading the Bible in reverse when we read the English and Greek translations?
