In the article Earth A Sphere by Design on Biblescienceforum.com, Physicist John Hartnett attempts to make it appear the globe earth is Biblical.
Hartnett’s globe earth theology requires a sphere. He misinterprets the ‘circle חוג of the earth’ in Isa 40:22 to mean a 2-dimensional plane, and stretches the circle into a sphere saying “each time it has the meaning of circle in some form. The great circles of longitudinal lines on the sphere are such circles.” He builds on this faulty foundation saying “for God to be above every point on the surface of a sphere, after all he is omnipresent, it is required that we live in a 3-dimensional universe, because the sphere is a consequence of that geometry.”
The Hebrew word translated ‘circle’ חוּג (Strong’s H2329) in Isa 40:22, is from the root חוּג (Strong’s H2328), which means to encircle or encompass. In A Hebrew & Chaldee Lexicon to the Old Testament p. 423, the meaning Dr. Fuerst gives for חוג is ‘a circle, an arch’ hence ‘the vault of the heavens, the circuit of the earth’ in Isa 40:22, Job 22:14, ‘enclosure, circle, compass’ in Prov 8:27, ‘to describe a circle, to turn in a circle, to enclose, to make a circle’, in Job 26:10 “He drew a circle about the waters” meaning ‘the ocean has its bounds’.
The ‘circle’ חוג of the earth is not a 2-dimensional plane, nor is it a sphere. According to Strong’s Lexicon “The Hebrews, like their neighbours, understood the world in terms of a flat disc with a dome-like sky above. The use of ‘chug’ in the Hebrew Bible reflects this understanding, while also highlighting the sovereignty and creative power of God, who establishes the boundaries of the earth and the heavens.”
The Old Testament Cosmos picture below is an accurate representation of Yahweh’s creation.
