Crossing Over the Heavens and the Earth in Matt 5:18

The Hebrew עבר means ‘pass over, through, by, pass on’ (Strong’s H5674), or ‘beyond, across’ (Strong’s H5676), is translated ‘pass away’ in Matt 5:18, making it sound like the Law will only ‘pass away’ when the heavens and the earth ‘pass away’.

In the following verses in Isaiah, the Hebrew עבר is used of crossing over to salvation:

• In Isa 51:10 “That not הלוא union with את be I היא that dry up המחרבת sea ים, the waters מי of deep תהום great רבה, that made השמה depths מעמקי sea ים a way דרך for redeemed לעבר to cross over עבר.”

• In Isa 60:15 “Instead of תחת that be you היותך forsaken עזובה and hated ושנואה and none ואין cross over עבר, and appoint you ושמתיך to majesty לגאון ages עולם, nobility משוש generation דור and generation ודור.”

• In Isa 62:10 “Go through עברו, go through עברו by gates בשערים, turn them פנו the way דרך of the people העם, cast up סלו, cast up סלו the highway המסלה, gather out סקלו from stones מאבן, the raise up הרימו an ensign נס upon על the peoples העמים.”

The meaning is similar in Matt 5:18 Yahshua said “For כי truly אמן I אני say אמר to you לכם until עד that כי cross over them יעברו the heavens השמים and the earth והארץ not לא will cross over תעבר one אחת stroke יוד or או small letter קוץ one alone אחד from out of מן the law התורה until עד leader אשר will make יעשה complete הכל.”

In Matt 24: 34 – 35 Yahshua said “Truly אמן say אמר I אני to you לכם, that כי not לא will go beyond יעבר the generation הדור this הזה until עד leader אשר will be them יהיו all כל toward god אלה. The heavens השמים and the earth והארץ will cross over יעברו, and my words ודברי not לא will cross over יעברון.

We see how the Greek and the English translations distort the meaning of these verses, leading us to believe ‘crossing over’ is ‘passing away’. As a result, many believe Matt 5:18 means the Law will remain until the heaven and earth pass away, and that the Law applies to us today, when it doesn’t. That is why we need to look at the Hebrew text to understand the Word of God!
